Is the NZ Herald a newspaper or a Police press release?

Check out this ridiculous propaganda piece for the Police on behalf of the NZ Herald. Note how at the end of the article the NZ Herald prints this...

Anyone with still or video footage of the incident is asked to contact police on (097) 858 6200 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

...can you believe that? The NZ Herald aren't asking for the footage themselves so they could show the other side of the story, they are pimping for info to go directly to the Police, who will of course do all they can to suppress that footage ever being seen by the rest of the public.

The NZ Herald should be actively seeking out what actually happened, instead they are printing advice to send any footage directly to the Cops.

Only Seven Sharp has the possibility of being less intellectually curious than the NZ Herald.

It is my belief the people involved in this situation will be appearing before our NZ justice system. I agree in part with what the story here wishes to criticize, a one sided process that only shows an interest in how a prosecution can proceed. Surely our reflex should be to share what we know with both the prosecusion and the defence, make sure our courts see what happens, all of it. Then perhaps a just outcome can be aided, and yes the media have a place in that process.

So, do I agree with this blog piece, yes in part, but surely this blog entry evokes a similar preloaded template in its text about how the world works, just as the NZ Herald does the same, offering its template of law and order and help the police catch the bad people.

Let's promote citizenship, involvement, balance, and of course, justice.

Can I believe a newspaper asks anyone with evidence about this incident to hand it to the organisation charged with investigating it? Er, actually, yes I can.

The NZ Herald should be actively seeking out what actually happened...

To satisfy your personal curiosity, or what? A cop tried to arrest a guy with outstanding warrants, he didn't want to be arrested, things got ugly. There doesn't seem to be any great mystery waiting to be solved here.

Even more worrying is the emergence of Crimestoppers as a vigilante private police force

I reckon the Herald should charge the police for advertising. A win win. Herald gets money and police get the info. Serious joke.

Critical thinking is clearly dying in NZ. The press becoming an agent for the police is a major lurch towards fascism. Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?
