Thank God for Wikileak!

'Hidden US Afghan war details' revealed by Wikileaks
More than 90,000 secret US military records have been leaked to the media, revealing hidden details of the war in Afghanistan, newspapers report. The documents are said to include unreported killings of Afghan civilians as well as covert operations by US special forces against Taliban leaders. UK daily The Guardian and the New York Times say the records were shown to them and to German weekly Der Spiegel by online whistle-blower Wikileaks. The US has condemned the leaks.

Vengeance attacks against wedding parties, death squads and billions syphoned off to fund the Taliban. I'm sorry, what are we doing in Afghanistan again?

All hail Wikileaks!

Let’s start in the deserts of Iraq.

Many people were perplexed by Tony Blair’s decision to back George W. Bush’s invasion, which has led to the deaths of 1.2 million people.

Blair said he was motivated by opposition to two things-terrorism and tyranny. First off he said Saddam Hussein might give weapons of mass destruction to jihadis. When it was proven after the invasion that Saddam had no WMD and no links to jihadis-as many critics of the war had said. Blair declared he would do it all again anyway, because Saddam Hussein was a tyrant.

Most critics of the war said the real reason was a desire for western access to vast supplies of oil.

JOHANN HARI/BLAIR’S TALE OF OIL AND BLOOD.

Then we should not be in any hurry to get out of Afghanistan today, and as Paul Buchanan mentions in this weeks Listener magazine we should not eschew our allies requests for 50 more troops to train Afghan forces with 190 from the provincial reconstruction team isolated in the mountainsides in Bamiyan not being very effective, and not knowing properly if it is 140 or 190 as he mentioned in his lucid spell-checked article (Bayiman twice) before the civilian head of operations said otherwise and confirmed what he said on the news last night that we had 190/210 in total deployed there and as a matter of fact, I believe that is what we should do in New Zealand. But the entirely possible attribution of Katrina to Climate Change was also unfairly overlooked and people opted instead to blame the ongoing protracted nature of conflict in this War in Afghanistan and also IRAQ on missing national guard troops to clean up and who are really just the equivalent of our territorials and are also just a part time force with proper jobs.

Local media trumpet the same motives as HARI.”Iraq is recovering from 30 years of dictatorship, 2-3 wars and sanctions.”They say…”Saddam Hussein poured money into his self-inflicted war with Iran, leaving nothing for hospitals or schools.”
Quite the contrary actually. Saddam, carefully prepared and conducted the long and painstaking negotiations that led to the nationalization of Iraq’s oil in 1972 and the enormous revenues freed from the hands of greedy corporations and their highly damaging ecological footprint like B.P’s oil spill allowed the government to be free of foreign dependence to independence for its own people and expanded public works, welfare, the civil service and the military all at the same time so lucrative as it has been proven.

Also of interest, a fascinating glimpse into Afghanistan in Adam Curtis's latest bolg with a series of surreal unedited clips from an archive of 14yrs of footage shot by a BBC cameraman he has gained access to.

I imagine a documentary on it's way but the series of blogs provide a very informative Historical perspective on Afghanistan and the powers and characters that have shaped it.

When Obama was elected he is said to have asked one question of the generals - if the U.S leave could a taliban afghanistan unite with Pakistan Taliban given the instability of that state and gain access to a nuclear arsenal? With the answer in the affirmative and the spectre of nuclear equipped islamofascists, he is sensibly preparring to say for the long haul. What are WE doing in Afghanistan? Being fucking responsible global citizens thats what! And no peacenik posturing is gonna change this situation. Doesnt mean I cheer when a U.S drone kills women and children but war is a dirty goddamned business...

Perhaps if we stopped creating "Islamofascists" Armchair warrior it would make us more "responsible global citizens"?

'A new study by America’s National Bureau for Economic Research looking at the circumstances around 4,000 civilian deaths in Afghanistan found a high correlation between NATO killing of even two civilians in an area and a spike of attacks on NATO and US troops. It turns out that Gen. Stanley McChrystal’s much-maligned stricter rules of engagement, especially limitations on blunt air strikes, actually likely reduced the number of attacks. Gen. David Petraeus is said to be considering altering the ROE.

From retired Lieutenant Colonel William Astore to Armchair Warrior.

'...don’t forget the seductive power of beyond-worse-case, doomsday scenarios, of the prophecies of pundits and so-called experts, who regularly tell us that, bad as our wars may be, doing anything to end them would be far worse. A typical scenario goes like this: If we withdraw from Afghanistan, the government of Hamid Karzai will collapse, the Taliban will surge to victory, al-Qaeda will pour into Afghan safe havens, and Pakistan will be further destabilized, its atomic bombs falling into the hands of terrorists out to destroy Peoria and Orlando.
Such fevered nightmares, impossible to disprove, may be conjured at any moment to scare critics into silence. They are a convenient bogeyman, leaving us cowering as we send our superman military out to save us (and the world as well), while preserving our right to visit the mall and travel to Disney World without being nuked.

The truth is that no one really knows what would happen if the U.S. disengaged from Afghanistan. But we do know what’s happening now, with us fully engaged: we’re pursuing a war that’s costing us nearly $7 billion a month that we’re not winning (and that’s arguably unwinnable), a war that may be increasing the chances of another 9/11, rather than decreasing them.'
