It ain’t easy being Green

Fitzsimons to quit Greens co-leadership
Green Party co-leader Jeanette Fitzsimons today confirmed she will stand down in June. She told reporters she looked forward to being an active backbencher, and it was time to pass the leadership on to the younger generation. Ms Fitzsimons has led the Greens since 1995.

As predicted on Tumeke, Jeanette Fitzsimons has stood down as co-leader and immediately the race is on between Sue Bradford and Metiria Turei. Who will win will really depend on how quickly things get bad on the unemployment front. Sue has the experience to rally those who are about to be thrown onto the scrapheap, her activism and knowledge of unemployed rights could be a crucial master stroke in terms of creating more support for the Greens, Metiria on the other hand could make in-roads to a Maori vote which quickly becomes dissatisfied with the Maori Party supporting National. The question is which of these two support bases will prove to be the most electoral significant as the Greens try and find their feet under such a hard right domination of Parliament.

Dangerous times for the Greens...if Labour tack left under Goff their base will be squeezed...and this whilst the invisible man and god knows who try to reinvigorate the Greens...that 5% hurdle may be about to claim another small party.

Either way it's a win.

My initial thoughts were for Metiria to balance the other leader who is also very red.

Sorry A. 24/2/09 9:16PM, there aint nothing left about Goff. Goff & King might stage a military coup. That's the only way those two will take power in NZ.

Don't laugh too much, the Army is in Labours pocket, who gave them the LAVs & LOVS. Two vehicles never deployed over seas when NZ is in more shit fights since WWII. They sold out the Airfarce and kept that kit for domestic purposes only.
A hell of a lot of expenditure if you never take it off shore, unless you never intended too!

The greens have to have someone much more broad than sue to run, she still has too much baggage

The have the veneer of respectability with Russell Norman and Kennedy Graham but none of the potential co-leader candidates appear to have the political clout or nouse to fill the shoes of Fitzsimmons. Metiria is definitely the best of a bad bunch...maybe time to pull out another Russell Norman from outside of parliament??

If they pulled a woman from outside those two there would be a civil war within the greens
