NZers still fleeing even with Key in power?

Kiwis fleeing to Australia hit record high
The number of New Zealanders moving to Australia last month set a record, and the flow of people moving here from other countries continued to slow. Statistics New Zealand figures issued yesterday show 47,800 people left to live in Australia in the year to October.

WHAT? After listening to National for 15 minutes it is obviously apparent that the reason NZers are fleeing NZ isn’t because that’s what NZers have always done, oh no, the reason why NZers are fleeing is because the Political Correctness stormtroopers of the Nanny State Dykorcracy in Helengrad are forcing NZers to flee, but even with the promise of a National Government in Power these NZers seem to be leaving regardless, so I’m a little confused, could it be that NZers have always left and that the entire Nanny State stuff was garbage? What excuse will National use if the numbers leaving are still high under them?

Hey Martyn, could be disappointed Lefties going into the wilderness for the duration of this band of groupies (ably led by our Tourism Minister).
This capture of our government by big business is truly horrific and this gangbang is just starting.

I think higher wages and lower taxes are a significant factor.......

"But even with the promise of a National Government in Power". Sure, it was looking good for National a month ago but it wasn't a dead cert. These people left while Labour was in power. I am confident that there will definitely be a decline in the emigrants in the near future. Certainly, from talking to friends of mine overseas. Of course, lefties might leave but no great loss there ;-)

Good to see that Bomber acknowledges the damage done by nine years of hard Labour is so comprehensive that even the promise of a National government can't stem the exodus. Nothing will even begin to change until National has a chance to enact some policy.

That's right, Anon.

I'm sure that Kiwi's will be staying in droves to have their work rights shat on and their public services slashed and sold by the government.

I think Noelle McCarthy's gaseous anal emissions disguised as editorials are the real reason people are leaving New Zealand.
Her reign of farting must be stopped now!

I imagine there will be a slowdown in the number of emigrations in the coming year or two - though more likely due to the recession than National.

Very few people up sticks and head to Aussie because of the government. They go for three main reasons:

1) To cash in on the mineral boom and make heaps more money.
2) The weather and lifestyle.
3) After a marriage breakup or other traumatic event.

None of which the National government can do much to mitigate!

Or any other government.

It's clear that John Key is the reason these people have fled the country! I feel sorry for this country with a tool like that in power...

I'll most likely be joining them shortly.

And he gets paid more that Rudd, what a fucking joke.

Most of these people planned to leave six months ago and aren't changing their plans.

Most of these people are leaving because they can make more money across the Tasman and that ain't changing anytime soon.

Lower taxes in Oz, you really did buy into the spin. Higher wages I'll concede, but wasn't it the last National Government who turned us into a low wage economy, thanks to the employment contracts act and other "business" friendly policy!

but wasn't it the last National Government who turned us into a low wage economy,

Blame the situation on a Govt from nine years ago.
Tell you what, wasn't it Labour that started the whole neo-liberal, selling off of state assets in the first place?

Guess we can put the blame of the neo-liberal experiment back at Labours feet.

Anon 7.33pm - please go as soon as possible. That just leaves more winners in New Zealand under a Government for winners.

Are you even vaguely aware of how stupid you sound?

God this is depressing - who are these morons?

First up, Australia doesn't have lower taxes than NZ.

People go back to NZ because of the lifestyle - the clean air and good schools and their family connections. Some (like tradespeople) find the work/pay thing comparable, but many of the more highly skilled have better opportunities in Australia. I cannot believe the National government is about to bankroll a particle accelerator or import the NYSE into Hamilton.

Young well educated kiwis leave for opportunities of a bigger place, which is something National can't provide. It's the same reason kiwis have been leaving NZ for years. No news there.

Most kiwis I know wouldn't move back for a National government unless the government could garantee the same work AND lifestyle opportunities they get in Australia (or elsewhere). NZ has lifestyle. Or it used to.

I suspect most ex pats would have voted labour - because they don't live with the frustration of low wages, but like the idea of a clean green socialist NZ. The election of a National gvt is unlikely to bring them home in their droves.

Many of the less skilled people who live in Australia live here not just for the wages - they live here because it has good healthcare and education. Again, something National isn't about to compete with in it's race to the bottom.

Good luck with it, New Zealand.

In fact, David Lange was raising the issue in 1978 when Muldoon was governing - I saw the video clip at the Welly Film Archive a few weeks back.

Regardless of who's in power, I'd say the real reason NZers go overseas is what Germaine Greer described as "suburban mediocrity" in 2004.
