Teenager accused of smoking weed requires police helicopter overkill

Police deny overreaction
Police have denied they overreacted when arresting Bailey Junior Kurariki on Friday night, saying reports of staff numbers had been exaggerated. Kurariki is back behind bars after allegedly breaching his parole conditions by using drugs. Kim Workman, former national director of the Prison Fellowship, said Kurariki's family had told him between 30 and 40 police officers surrounded the house and a helicopter hovered overhead as he was arrested. But Counties Manukau police spokeswoman Senior Sergeant Denise Traill said there were nothing like 30 police officers present.

Note they don’t deny they used a Police helicopter to arrest a teenager accused of smoking weed, and why don’t the Police tell us how many cops they sent into arrest a teenager accused of smoking weed, if it wasn’t 30 – how many were there? How can any level of Police + copters to arrest an allegation of weed look anything other than over kill? We sentenced a child to prison for nothing more than being a look out in a mugging that went wrong, most NZers, based on the hysteria created by the Michael Choy killing, seem to think that Bailey himself beat Michael Choy for several hours, I questioned the hysteria at the time, I questioned sending a child to prison and I questioned the rehabilitation available to him with the media glare is so firmly fixated on watching him fail once released – and I sure as hell question sending a chopper and teams of cops – not 30, but teams of cops into arrest him on suspicion of smoking a joint, the wider attitude towards Bailey and the manner in which we are treating him is jaw dropping and on some level reeks of outright racism.

Choy’s death was a tragic mistake what we are doing to Bailey is a tragedy.

"A mugging that went wrong." So when someone (i.e. yet another Asian assaulted by yet another Polynesian) is smashed over the head with a baseball bat how was the mugging supposed to go "right"?

I don't think that Kurariki smashed anyone with a bat?

surely people, this is a P lab Kurariki was running? and the chopper is essential policing in these days of obesity and bearded cops who are able to cover up their multiple fat chins... I don't believe in cop bashing but with more comprehensive body armour mooted, what the hell, it'll become good exercise

Think about this a little more positively please.. While half the cops in Auckland were tooling up to arrest this fella... They weren't skulking in bushes trying to tax hapless motorists to death.

Parole brings with it a set of conditions for the parolee to rejoin civilised society. If they don't follow these simple conditions for the specified time period then back to jail unfortunately. He has had a chance to show he could keep his nose clean, but has wasted it unfortunately.

Given the high profile nature of this parolee and the media interest that surrounds BJK (your own included) it is unsuprising the cops overreacted seomewhat, if they didn't and a relative of the dead man was beating BJK to death what would your reaction be? Or conversely if BJK was doing something more serious than smoking weed and the cops didn't investigate surely you'd be posting about how neglegent the cops were and how the parole system doesn't work.

A helicopter was probably overkill but surely better safe than sorry?

The same family that spawned such a mixed up and dangerous child in the first place? I'll take what they say with a pinch of salt thanks.

If Bomber wasn't such a lazy "journalist" he could have found this article in under a minute. 13 officers at most. Mostly used to cordon off the area.

The Police helicopter is always flying about or on immediate standby. Unless it is already busy with something else it will go to any incident where there is a risk of someone gapping it.

Bomber is a blogger not a journalist. He doesn't have to check his facts, just mouth off on subjects he is ill informed about.

Didn't Bomber get sued when presenting Stake Out for misrepresenting facts? I'm sure the Sunday News Roast would get sued too (if anyone watched it!)

Why don't you explain to us how hitting someone over the head with a baseball bat which subsequently results in their death is a tragic accident?

Choy's death is the true tragedy.
What happen to Baily is justice.

What next bomber, are you going to start blaming women for their rapes because they were wearing provocative clothing?

Heinrich Himmler didn't personally kill any jews, he just have the orders. Does that make him any less guilty of genocide?

So now Bombers complaining because there were 13 cops in the 'area' whilst a convicted killer was taken into custody from his family. Did the Police know how he or his family would react?

I really do wonder what Bombers attitude would have been if it had been a bunch of white kids who bashed a Maori to death in such a manner. I don't think he would be minimising such a murder as a 'tragic mistake'. I think the offenders being Maori and the dead person being just 'another asian' in Bombers mind plays a big part in his attitude towards this case.

What kind of a person could horribly trivialise someone being callously beaten to death in such a way then left to die on the ground like a dog, and all for a handful of loose change.

Can Bomber not even read?

He wasn't arrested because he was smoking weed, he was arrested because he breached the terms of his release conditions, the same as every other criminal. Maybe the cops should only send one cop in future, just to make it 'fair' that Kurakiki has a chance of escaping.

Little wonder given your level of naiveity that you believe his family that there were 30-40 cops surrounding his house, the same disgusting family who raised Kurakiki to be the killer that he is.

Bomber complains about racism is prison yet wants to give violent criminals a free pass because of the colour of their skin.

He's a fucking disgrace and is symptomatic about what is wrong with the system giving too many rights to the perpertrators of criminal acts instead of the victims.

SHAME!

Jeremy are you still reading Tumeke? Pity about your gf not being able to send text messages anylonger eh? Past staff are always the most bitter aren't they? Perhaps Bomber wasn't as hated as you were my friend, he seems to be doing very well at Alt, you on the other hand aren't there any longer, silly boy.

Aren't a large number of staff at alt not paid anyway so it's not like you're losing anything.

While more than a couple of cops to arrest a teenager for bail breach is OTT, Bomber is wrong to claim Kurariki was 'just a lookout for a mugging that went wrong'.

Those convicted were found guilty of murder, Bomber - not manslaughter. The court said they did it deliberately!

And lookouts are an essential part of the team. And Kurariki hasn't shown any remorse, except for getting caught...

But that's white man's isen't it bobo. Maybe we should adopt what the aborigines do in Oz; spear the little cunt in the leg.

Its interesting if you look at some of Tims earlier posts which clearly demonstrate an anti asian bias that Bomber so callously dismisses Michael Choys life and its horrible ending as just a 'mistake'.

I very much doubt he would dismiss the horrible murder of a white person as just a 'mistake', they bashed him to death and left him to die like he wasn't even human. They have not only ended his life but ended the lives of his parents and his partner neither of whom will ever overcome what they did to Michael.

And yeh Bomber he does actually have a name, while he might be just another 'Choy' to you, he had a family, he had hopes and ambitions before he was brutally murdered and left to die like a dog.
